How did our stunning winner, the peony, get its name? Two Greek myths battle for bragging rights:

🗡️ In Myth #1, the physician Paeon squeezes juice from the root of this flashy flower. He brews it up into a healing potion which is able to cure a war-wounded Pluto. Paeon’s teacher, Asklepios – who had not been available at crunch time – is none too pleased with his student’s new renown. His teacherly solution? Murder.

Luckily, Zeus finds Paeon’s corpse, and decides to restore him to glory in a glorious flower: the Paeonia, or peony.

🫦 In Myth #2, Apollo annoys Aphrodite by making eyes at Paeonia, a nymph. “Oh no you don’t,” says Aphrodite, and she turns the wee trollop into a flower.
