Nosing Around The Louvre

Q.
We know it as the home of Da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’, but what other notable artworks can be found at The Louvre?

.

A.
Not surprisingly, The Louvre is home to some of the most remarkable paintings in the world. Eugene Delacroix’s ‘Liberty Leading The People. ‘Raphael’s ‘La Belle Jardinière.’  ‘The Wedding At Cana’ by Veronese.  Johannes Vermeer’s ‘The Lacemaker’ .

In 2021, Paris’ stunning museum put its collection online – nearly 500,000 works – for all to see for free.

As Jean-Luc Martinez, President-Director of the Musée du Louvre, wrote: ‘Today, the Louvre is dusting off its treasures, even the least-known. For the first time, anyone can access the entire collection of works from a computer or smartphone for free, whether they are on display in the museum, on loan, even long-term, or in storage. The Louvre’s stunning cultural heritage is all now just a click away!’

Along with an incredible richness of paintings, you’ll also find furniture, jewellery + finery, objects, sculptures, textiles, writing + inscriptions. There is, for instance, the breathtaking ‘Winged Victory of Samothrace’, a Hellenestic sculpture of Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory, created around the 2nd Century BC. Here she is at the Louvre undergoing restoration.
