Painting Nature

Q.

With an abundance of beautiful possibilities, how do artists settle on certain natural elements or scenes as inspiration?

.

A.

To explore this question, we talked to Anne Griffiths, a talented Canadian painter who is known for her striking landscape paintings.

.

As Griffiths told us:

‘My paintings do not begin with a particular location or composition in mind. Rather, the landscape and specific natural elements that appear in my work seem to flow out of me as I get underway on a new canvas.’

‘The visual gathering I do while in nature creates a near endless supply of inspiration which I store as fragments of form, colour and energy within my memory. The individual paintings then grow quite organically through my colour development and explorations of the surface with mark-making. I am often surprised by the directions they take me.’

‘This way of working allows freedom and promotes discovery while still being rooted in my own reactions and impressions of the natural world I encounter. I put trust in this process to lead me to fresh places in my practice.’

.

Anne Griffiths has a new solo show – ‘Everything Under The Sun’ –  running at Vancouver’s Bau-Xi Gallery from June 7th to the 21st. A sampling…
