To Be An Artist
Q.
Many dream of life as an artist, but few take the leap. What is it like to make the decision to become a professional artist? When and how do artists know this is a life worth pursuing? And how does life as an artist both confirm and surprise?
.
A.
To start exploring these questions, we consulted an exciting, ascending Vancouver artist: Sima Fabricant. She told us:
‘I have always wanted to be a painter. I grew up surrounded by artists and it was always shown to me as a viable option because the adults around me were doing it. All of my childhood friends had artist parents, including me, and creativity was very encouraged. I knew I was going to be a practicing artist from a very young age. It was never a question in my mind.’
.
‘In a lot of ways, the way I work hasn’t changed much since I was a kid. I’m still working with a similar kind of play and exploration. I think when an artist starts to work professionally and their work gets recognised, the challenge then becomes how to stay true to that child-like attitude of exploration and play. I am still learning how to stay connected with that part of myself and my work, and I think it is a lifelong challenge for artists who are committed to growth and exploration. ‘
