First Dance Favourites
Q.
The post-nuptials first dance is a big deal these days. It’s not unusual to find painstakingly chosen songs, dance lessons, choreographers …
Which songs are we most likely to hear during this high-stakes first dance?
.
A.
Last year, The Knot surveyed 10,000 married couples around what they see as the best first dance songs. The winner for 2023? ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ by Elvis Presley.
Elvis’ version of this much-covered song – created by Luigi Creatore, Hugo Peretti, and George David Weiss – featured in his 1961 ‘Blue Hawaii’ album.
The ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ melody is based on a 1700s French melody composed by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini for ‘Plaisir d’Amour’ – a love song based on a poem by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian. None other than Hector Berlioz orchestrated Plaisir d’Amour for orchestra.
Here’s a performance of the Berlioz orchestration with Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal conducted by Charles Dutoit. Baritone François Le Roux features on vocals.
