The comforts of home without all the chores? Sure. That’s a winning hotel formula. But, do we want to see other guests in their rumpled, blinds-down, teeth-out, home glory? We do not. What types of in-hotel behaviour do others find particularly off-putting?

Hotels.com surveyed 2,910 of their Instagram followers. What did they find?

Horrid Hotel Habits. 2025
i.    Walking about barefoot. 94%
ii.   Bath robes in the lobby. 92%
iii.  PDA at the pool. 86%
iv.  Pajamas at breakfast 👀. 76%
v.   The towel plonk. Trying to reserve sun chairs. 60%

In 2024, Yougov polled 1.147 adults on hotel do’s and don’ts. Their survey said…

ii.   Smoking in non-smoking rooms. 92%
iii.  Running off with hotel coat hangers. 86%
iv.   Taking home towels. 86%
v.    Sneaking in unapproved pets. 83%
vi.   Checking out late without asking the hotel. 79%
vii.  Cramming in more than the number of allotted guests. 79%
viii. Talking loudly in the room after 10pm. 79%
ix.   Taking home hotel bibles. 👀. 67%
x.    Letting kids jump on the bed. 65%

i.   Asking for extra room amenities, like blankets and pillows. 90%
ii.  Ringing the front desk to complain about noisy neighbours. 82%
iii. Changing bath towels after one use. 72%
iv.  Leaving sheets and blankets on the bed before checkout. 78%
iv.  Pocketing mini hotel shampoos, conditioners, and body wash (if the hotel hasn’t gone the  pump dispenser route, that is) 77%
